SEO can provide great results, but only with the right time investment. But how long can it take?

However, here is a plausible scenario for what your SEO efforts might look like during the initial months, and the results you might expect.
  • Month 1 – Research and discovery, website audit, keyword strategy, and planning. If research and discovery can be done quickly, then technical changes may start being made to the website within the first month. In other cases a thorough research and discovery phase can last more than one month.
  • Month 2 – Begin technical SEO work, that is, making modification to the website based on site audit results. In some cases the website needs to be overhauled, and this of itself can take months. Other SEO activities such as working on the link profile and building content can be done at the same time the overhaul is happening. If you find yourself in this overhaul situation, you’ll be doing “SEO” but you still won’t be seeing any results at all, since the changes being made will only start to have an impact once they’re finished.
  • Month 3 – Start focusing on content creation. Blogging, FAQs, whitepapers, articles, expanded product and company information, etc. Ideally you would have started on this right after the strategy and planning, but often budgets restrict what can be done at once, and so a technical overhaul needs to come first. This being the case, you might start seeing some improvements in rankings by the end of this month. If those rankings are translating into leads or sales then even better, but you wouldn’t necessarily expect them yet.
  • Month 4 – Continued content creation, technical optimization of the website, and development of a healthy link profile (which may includecleaning up low quality links). By this month you could expect to see a marked increase in rankings, traffic, and lead generation. It won’t be anywhere close to the improvements you should 12 months into your SEO efforts, but it should be significant enough that you know SEO is working.
  • Month 5 – By this month or perhaps earlier in the process you may have started incorporating social media management into your plan to amplify your content and increase direct traffic to your website. This can lead to a healthy, natural link profile, and of course generate leads in and of itself. You would continue with content creation and perhaps engage in some PR or media outreach. You should be seeing more and more traffic coming in from SEO at this point, and your leads should be growing as a result.
  • Month 6 – If your traffic has reached 5,000 visitors per month or more by this point, you could benefit from adding conversion rate optimization to your efforts to improve how the traffic you’re receiving converts into leads and/or sales. From this point on, your activities may be consistently focused on content creation and promoting that content, or you may be doing things that are more creative. The specific activities can vary greatly depending on what type of company you are and what kind of website you have.

Interesting mate -- length of time it takes to get ranked is always something you get asked, and it is a hard one to answer. Competitiveness, domain age, and brand level are the three things I look for at the start -- after that it becomes an endless endeavor.

Using existing analytics can help, but many times you're implementing them as well. One of my clients put bonus conditions on getting ranked on front page -- left him after six months, then a couple months later many of the bonus terms popped into place. They just don't get the idea of time in our industry

As an SEO Professional I can say with confidence that the Google algorithm is one almighty robust cookie to deal with. Google Algorithm takes account keywords, quality of content and a clean, natural and appropriate link profile. Bing, on the other hand, differs in its selection; social search is impressively dominant, and the attempt to banish link spam has not been quite as successful. With Bing, local results over take it all.


Bing and Google’s algorithms are similar in many ways.



For example, optimizing URLs and domain names for keywords and having a large number of high-quality, dofollow backlinks are equally important to Bing/Yahoo and Google.



However, that’s pretty much where the similarities between the two search engines end. As far as the differences, here are the main ones to worry about:



Indexing
One of the important differences between Google and Bing is site indexing. It is seen that Google crawls and indexes the pages faster compared to Bing. Although, both provides submit URL's option in their webmaster tools  



Website Type
While Google focuses on newer, commercial, or popular websites in its results, Bing tends to favor older websites with more official domain names, such as .edu or .gov. What does all this mean? Well, that Google is quick to offer up socially relevant sites, whereas Bing is more likely to provide factually relevant information.



Flash Media



While Google has a hard time figuring out what to do about Flash media, Bing does a great job of indexing it and offers extra credit for sites that use it.



Local
Local searches on Bing and Google will often have much different results, with Google’s often swaying in favor of larger, more established companies and Bing more likely to show small businesses. Why? Because when you search for local businesses on Bing, it assumes that you want the most proximal, which isn’t always the big-box store in town. Google, however, gives you the most credible, which often is the larger business.



Social
One of the things that sets Bing apart from Google the most is its approach to search by integrating social media. When searching on Bing, if a Facebook friend has recommended or rated the company or product mentioned in the search, the user can see it right away. Google hasn’t quite been able to integrate social media into their searches as well as Bing.



On-Page SEO
Google is much smarter than Bing when it comes to keywords. While Google is far more intuitive about the context of a page, Bing still relies heavily on keywords in page titles, meta tags, and on the page, which means that straightforward, specific keywords are the way to go for Bing SEO.



Sitelinks
In Google you can ask to have a sitelink removed, but there’s no way to do this with Bing.



Link building / Value
Bing has a webmaster centre, the first example being the “backlinks” area, There’s also an outbound links – actually that’s quite an awesome tool! For every link your website has, Bing assigns a “page score” to help indicate the value of those links.



Query matching in the domain name
An exact match domain has the highest (most powerful) correlation to rankings. Google is slightly higher than Bing – but exact match domains are the way to go, hyphenated versions are less powerful but more frequent (powerful) in Bing. Just having keywords in the domain name has substantial positive correlation for both engines.

Exact match domains using .coms have a more powerful correlation to rankings in Google and Bing. Bing seems not to mind so much with exact match domains that are .net, org etc.



Keywords in sub-domains
Using all the keywords in the subdomain – seems to be some correlation between keyword use in the subdomain and Google rankings, but much less so with Bing. Bing may be rewarding subdomain keywords a lot less than previously, and generally speaking KW’s in subdomains are not nearly as powerful as the main domain



Website homepages
Bing has substantial correlation with homepage out performing internal pages in the search results. Google has a slight preference as well, but less so than Bing.



Anchor text link matches
The raw quantity of exact match anchor text links correlates hardly at all with rankings. It’s about linking root domains with exact match anchor text links. In fact this is the highest of all correlative metrics for high rankings. Bing seems more “Google like” now than they were around 10 moths ago.

Link attributes are still extremely powerful, and more important than on page SEO factors. Google and Bing are remarkably similar in SEO, and more so than they were last year. 






Canonical Requirements
Google supports the use of the Canonical tag as a way for website owners to easily avoid duplicate content issues. Bing, on the other hand, does not support the Canonical tag and does not offer Canonical URL management in their Webmaster Center. 



Page Size
page size is less of an issue for Google crawler.  Bing, however, currently only caches the first 100k of most web pages (although the range is more like 95k-105k).   



301 & 302 Redirects:  
Although Google prefers a 301 redirect, a 302 will not cause major issues with indexing.  However, if a website employs a 302 Canonical redirect instead of a 301, Bing will not follow the redirect and, in many cases, will refuse to index the website altogether.  



Meta Refreshes:  
Some websites still utilize a Meta Refresh to redirect users.  Bing and Google handle this technique very differently.  Google will follow a zero-second Meta refresh and treat it like a 301.   Bing will not.  As a matter of fact, the use of a Meta Refresh will terminate the Bing crawler from accessing any more of the website being indexed.

White hat versus black hat techniques

SEO techniques can be classified into two broad categories: techniques that search engines recommend as part of good design, and those techniques of which search engines do not approve. The search engines attempt to minimize the effect of the latter, among them spamdexing. Industry commentators have classified these methods, and the practitioners who employ them, as either white hat SEO, or black hat SEO. White hats tend to produce results that last a long time, whereas black hats anticipate that their sites may eventually be banned either temporarily or permanently once the search engines discover what they are doing.

An SEO technique is considered white hat if it conforms to the search engines' guidelines and involves no deception. Black hat SEO is both a myth and a reality we have to face sooner or later as SEO practitioners. While we abide by probably one of the strictest SEO codes of ethics around and SEO Information Technology is a clean white hat SEO company itself we still can’t deny that there is black hat SEO.

Listed are few ways to use black hat SEO for your SERP's benefits

  1. IP delivery – Offer the proper localized content to those coming from a country specific IP address. Offer the user a choice though. Shopping.com does a great job here.
  2. 301 redirects – Redirect outdated pages to the newer versions or your homepage. When moving to a new domain use them of course as well.

  7. Automatically generated keyword pages – Some shopping search engines create pages from each Google search query and assign the appropriate products to each query. You can do that as well if you have enough content.
  8. Mispsellings – Define, correct the misspelled term and/or redirect to the correct version.
  9. Scraping – Create mirrors for popular sites. Offer them to the respective webmasters. Most will be glad to pay less.
  10. Ad only pages – Create all page ads (interstitials) and show them before users see content like many old media do
  11. Hidden text – Create modern CSS based websites with JQuery effects. They often hide large portions of text in layers to display them on click or mouse over for usability reasons. Example: CSS pagination.

  13. Blog spam – Don’t spam yourself! Get spammed! Install a WordPress blog without Akismet spam protection. Then create a few posts about Mesothelioma for example, a very profitable keyword. If they contain the keyword publish them and remove the outgoing links of course. Bot user generated content so to say.

  18. New exploits – Find them and report them, blog about them. You break story and thus you get all the attention and links. Dave Naylor is excellent at it.
  19. Brand jacking – Write a bad review for a brand that has disappointed you or destroys the planet or set up a brand x sucks page and let consumers voice their concerns.
  20. Rogue bots – Spider websites and make their webmasters aware of broken links and other issues. Some people may be thankful enough to link to you.
  21. Hidden affiliate links – In fact hiding affiliate links is good for usability and can be even more ethical than showing them. example.com/ref?id=87233683 is far worse than than just example.com. Also unsuspecting Web users will copy your ad to forums etc. which might break their TOS. The only thing you have to do is disclose the affiliate as such. I prefer to use [ad] (on Twitter for example) or [partner-link] elsewhere. This way you can strip the annoying “ref” ids and achieve full disclosure at the same time.
  22. Doorway pages – Effectively doorway pages could also be called landing pages. The only difference is that doorway pages are worthless crap while landing pages are streamlined to suffice on their own. Common for both is that they are highly optimized for organic search traffic. So instead of making your doorway pages just a place to get skipped optimize them as landing pages and make the users convert right there.
  23. Multiple subdomains – Multiple subdomains for one domain can serve an ethical purpose. Just think blogspot.co or wordpress.com – they create multiple subdomains by UGC. This way they can rank several times for a query. You can offer subdomains to your users as well.
  24. Twitter automation – There is nothing wrong with Twitter automation as long as you don’t overdo it. Scheduling and repeating tweets, even automatically tweeting RSS feeds from your or other blogs is perfectly OK as long as the Twitter account has a real person attending it who tweets “manually” as well. Bot accounts can be ethical as well in case they are useful no only for yourself. A bot collecting news about Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake would be perfectly legit if you ask me.
  25. Deceptive headlines – Tabloids use them all the time, black hat SEO also do. There are ethical use cases for deceptive headlines though. Satire is one of course and humor simply as well. For instance I could end this list with 24 items and declare this post to a list of 30 items anyways. That would be a good laugh. I’ve done that in the past but in a more humorous post.
  26. Google Bowling – The bad thing about Google bowling is that you hurt sites you don’t like. You could reverse that: Reverse Google bowling would mean that you push sites of competitors you like to make those you dislike disappear below. In a way we do that all the time linking out to the competition, the good guys of SEO who then outrank the ugly sites we like a lot less.
  27. Invisible links – You’d never used invisible links on your sites did you? You liar! You have. Most free web counters and statistic tools use them. Statcounter is a good example. So when you embed them on your site you use invisible links.
  28. Different content for search engines than users – Do you use WordPress? Then you have the nofollow attribute added to your comment links. this way the search engine gets different content than the user. He sees and clicks a link. A search bot sees a no trespass sign instead. In white hat SEO it’s often called PageRank sculpting. Most social media add ons do that by default.
  29. Hacking sites – While crackers hack sites security experts warn site owners that they vulnerabilities. Both discover the same issues. Recently I got an email by someone who warned me to update my WordPress installation. That was a grand idea I thought.
  30. Slander linkbait – Pulling a Calacanis like “SEO is bullshit” is quite common these days. Why don’t do it the other way around? The anti SEO thing doesn’t work that good anymore unless you are as famous as Robert Scoble. In contrast a post dealing with “100 Reasons to Love SEO Experts” might strike a chord by now.
  31. Map spam – Instead of faking multiple addresses all over the place just to appear on Google Maps and Local why don’t you simply create an affiliate network of real life small business owners with shops and offices who, for a small amount of money, are your representatives there? All they need to do is to collect your mail from Google and potential clients.
